I guess a better title for this post would be Communicating to Spirits of the Dead Through Their Bones. But that’s a little lengthy.
Bones are commonly used to enhance spirit communication. According to some theories, a piece of the deceased’s soul still remains in the bone, allowing the soul to contact the living–kind of like a spiritual telephone. There are many techniques to communicate via bones, but this is my personal method.
For this technique, you need a solid foundation with energy work. You’ll also need ethically gathered bones. You can gather them in the wild, buy cleaned and ethically sourced bones online, or get some from your local butcher and clean them yourself.
This process happens within a couple minutes, so here is each step, slowed down.
The First Time:
Be in the presence of your bone. I like to hold mine to increase the energy connection, but if you’d rather connect from afar, do so. Whatever feels comfortable and efficient.
Connect to the bone’s energy. Focus on the bone. You don’t need to clear your mind or go into a trance; just focus. Try not to ask questions or talk to the bone just yet. The spirit within the bone will often speak to you without prompting.
Feel what you feel. See what you see, hear what you hear. Do not try to control it or question it just yet.
Some messages to take note of: visions, sounds, names or letters, smells, colors, feelings.
All of these sensations may come fast. You do not have to hold onto the bone for very long–maybe like a minute.
You may want to write down what you experienced afterwards. Some people write during in a form of automatic writing. Of course, this step is entirely up to you.
Think a bit about what you experienced. What kind of personality does the soul have? Is it talkative? Aggressive? Did anything confusing come up? Would it be willing to work with you on anything?
Once you have a general sense of the soul, it will be a lot easier to communicate directly.
Every Time Thereafter:
Do the same thing as last time, but this time, you may ask questions. You may ask them out loud, or in your mind.
Ask, and then wait for a response.
If you were confused by any responses, or would like confirmation on what you gathered, you may use a pendulum or other form of divination to confirm.
I hope this was helpful or gave some good ideas. Happy witching! (*^▽^)/
A little while ago, I realized that there is NO info on what bones to use for what. I was clueless and had no idea where to begin. Research was fruitless and asking others came with no results.
So I sat down during preap algebra 2 and made my own list.
These are my own correspondences, based off of what I felt like and remembering bits of spells I’d thought about. They are 100% my own, taken from no one.
Please give me credit if you use it anywhere else 🙂
I also know I haven’t included every bone out there, if I missed one msg me, I’ll give it some thought and see what happens! 😀

▪Hand- art, artistic ability, creativity, energy
▪Fingers- fluidity, progress, endurance
▪Nails/ claws- fighting, protection, finding things out, knowledge, struggle, balance
▪Rib- agility, protection

▪Ankle- movement, moving on, catalyst
▪Foot- endurance, moving on, leaving things behind, hard work, independence, luck
▪Toe- balance, help, prosperity, money, changing luck (for the better or worse)
▪Tail- (like actual bones in the animals tail, not the tailbone) agility, secrecy, alarm, cursing
(Edited to include:)
▪Antlers- strength, endurance, masculine energy, Cernunnos, protection, more centered toward nature and earth, deflecting curses, and hope.
▪Horns- wealth, the home, determination, aggressive protection, more centered toward that which is man made, and cursing
(Second edit)
▪Wings- adventure, deviating from the norm, sending/ receiving messages, travel, starting a new adventure/ path, hope, luck, wishes, comfort (let it be amplifying or taking away)
The type of bird would also affect the correspondences; the wing bones, to me, would increase the things the bird stands for
Note that I live in a heavily forested area of the PNW so not all of this may apply to you!
Where to look (casual version):
Under bridges, you’ll often find owl pellets with rodent and bird bones in them.
If you see hairy scat (poop) get a stick and break it apart, sometimes there’ll be small animal bones/bone shards. Please be safe, predator scat can have icky things like parasites.
The sides of trails. I’ve found so many bones there!
The sides of the road.
Forest to meadow edges.
Driving pullouts that are a bit private, if you feel okay with using bones from roadkill/poached animals.
Where to look (dedicated version):
A few feet to 10+ feet into the bushes past a meadows edge.
Follow deer trails.
Go to the big trees, animals are drawn to them.
Get off the main trail.
Check out holes in the ground.
The sides of back roads/logging type roads.
Explore the parts of the forest you haven’t been to before. Make new trails. Walk along fallen logs.
In strangely clear spots in the forest. (As I’m editing this post, i see this and realize that’s exactly how I found a skull today)
Crawl. I’ve found so many bones by just crawling around (usually looking for other things/checking stuff out).
DEER. TRAILS. They take you to less humanized areas easily.
Keep in mind:
Bones can often get spread out, but where you find one you can typically find more if you look far/ wide enough.
If you live in a foresty type place, bones are rarely bleached white. Look for browns, greens, mild whites that don’t quite look like sticks.
Skulls are often not in the same area as the rest of the bones because it’s a good food source for animals so they’ll drag the head off for themselves! (This definitely isn’t always true however).
Think about where animals would go to die, and where predators would take their kills.
You won’t always find bones! Some places just don’t have any! Some have bones that are buried.
This certainly isn’t all-encompassing and I’d welcome people in different regions to jump in with their methods 🙂
