Panic Attack Relief

reasonstohide:

I call this my “instant panic relief pouch” (IPRP). It’s an idea I took from learning about self-soothing, which I’ve posted about in the past.  I decided to experiment with ways that I could self-sooth on the go when I sensed oncoming panic or fear. For me, feelings of panic come up both at home and when I’m out at work, school, or with friends. If you feel uncomfortable panic or anxiety coming up, take a couple of minutes to yourself and go over the things in your pouch. Right now my pouch contains:

  • one scent (right now I’m using cherry!)
  • a worry stone
  • a paper filled with little quotes too personal to be worth posting.

Bottled cents can usually be purchased at your local health food store. I tend to change them up because if I use one for too long, it becomes less effective for me. I keep the worry stone because when feeling high anxiety, panic, or fear I tend to take it out on my hands the most– clenching or wringing them a lot. The stone is cool and soothing and less strenuous on my hands. It also appeals to the sense of ‘touch’.

The most effective way to use an IPRP is to customize it to your needs. Pick out things you find soothing. I keep everything in the separate pouch for safety (in case the glass bottle breaks) but also because that makes it much easier to find. If you’re feeling jittery the last thing you want is to be digging around for small items in your purse like a lunatic, amiright?

If anyone likes the idea and comes up with a neat variation feel free to post it or send it to me and I’ll put it up to share with everyone!
